Dear friends across the political spectrum,
Yesterday, the Granite Staters most engaged in our political process made their voices heard. I’d like to thank you all for your deep desire to stay engaged with our civic institutions during this vulnerable time for their integrity.
The exact number of voters who turned out is still famously being disputed on social media, but we should have exact turnout numbers from the Secretary of State by tomorrow afternoon. What we do know is what we’ve always known: money is the anthem of success. I came into this race knowing full well that someone running at the state level or above who does not possess financial resources and prior institutional authority is engaging in a Sisyphean effort.
As I’m fond of saying, “gravity always wins.”
But I’m reconsidering the axiom.
A better metaphor for challenging the system would be water eroding stone: aggressively gentle in its approach, ultimately unlimited in its patience.
It was my first campaign of many. I came into this as a wildly irreverent candidate. I brought a seemingly paradoxical ideology, but a cross-party experience that never betrayed either side. A classical liberal in a Democratic primary, I was denied an ActBlue account. Forums at which I was scheduled to appear misspelled my name, each in a different way. One substituted my photo with that of an entirely different woman.
I had no money, which is a common problem for the candidates who care the most. Since I like to share my toys, I entered the fray with a desire to open-source my methods as an example to Davids against Goliaths. I challenged both Chris Pappas and Scott Brown in direct confrontations to put the establishment on notice, even though I wasn’t running against either of them. I was the return-on-investment winner in my race.
To that end, I’d like to thank the entire field, but particularly Sarah Chadzynski for her steadfast dedication to empathy as a superpower, and Bill Conlin and Matthew Emerson for their bravery in running on principle. There are good people across the spectrum. Never forget that.
But perhaps most importantly for the libertarian movement, I very publicly helped solidify a “left” lane in mainstream New Hampshire politics, however narrow, to continue to synthesize progressive values with libertarian solutions. If we can’t defeat the uniparty right now, we can at least challenge it by creating a new big tent. We can all act as a check on bloated government, as well as those who continue to tarnish the reputation of the libertarian movement by aligning with MAGA’s paleo and neoconservative tendencies. They are, by definition, NOT libertarian.
By relying entirely on ethical priority, exposing campaign hypocrisy and political incentives, with your vote, we proved that not only can a small campaign punch above its weight, it can antagonize the establishment into exposing its arrogance and narcissism.
To the few who voted for me despite me telling you not to, you have showed everyone what Live Free or Die really means to us.
